Sailing Around The World

My Reason!

I am still here in Turks and can’t wait to go back to the ocean. The only way to keep myself occupied is to clean, write, or talk to all the people that walk by the boat. I have answered many of the same questions that each new person walks by and asks. But recently a new question was asked that I was very surprised to hear and toiled with for a few days.  This girl close to my age from the USA asked me about pirates and people wanting to hurt me. I gave her my standard response which did not shut her up. She looked very puzzled and said “well aren’t you afraid of pirates and the evil out in the world especially because you have that big American Flag hanging off the back”? Being a little angry about her question I responded quickly with “well you have blond hair aren’t you a little worried people will think you’re stupid”? Just kidding! I wish I did have that thought in my mind at the time but instead thought about it for a moment. I told her that I am an American, this ship is American and I fly that big red, white, blue, and star covered flag everywhere I go with bells on now that you question it!

After her and the family left I was still upset that an American of my age and generation X would question why I fly the American flag so proudly in foreign waters good or other wise. I took it as an insult and my heart is cold with disgust. I thought to myself that, that girl never was on a team! I have been on teams my whole life and they have taught me that when you are on a team it’s about the team not you! I tried my hardest and gave everything I have to it whether the end result is a lose or win. In the end the only thing that matters is representing what you stand for as a team. I transferred that idea to my career and worked the best I could and backed up my team even when I disagreed. I am on my own now and I still feel I am on a team. My team is America and like or fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers that have spent there life honoring it. I to will fly that American flag everywhere I go because no matter what I believe that Americans are the strongest team in the world and so I represent and honor it with OUR nations team symbol.

On sailing through Euope I always thought that the American flag was the best looking of any of the others and was very proud of it flying on the stern as there were very few American flaged yachts. Most Europeans really like Americans and are interested in your story. I second the blond question. Too bad you thought of it afterwards.
    Cheers!

That we are J. And we have reason to be proud and thankful but remember there are many bad people out there who don’t believe that. Be careful and safe! Tell the “Old Skipper” an old friend says hi!

  5. Dragonsbane, as a US Documented vessel… is US soil. If someone fucks with that, they’re going to pay. Continue to proudly fly the Red, White, and Blue; we are part of a great country (regardless of our opinions about the current state of things.)
